The Skill Called Poker Raise
January 27, 2012 About Poker Poker Tips

Raise in poker establishes a player as a novice, amateur or an expert. And a good poker raise can come from a good poker strategy. In fact an effective strategy in poker is all about how you will make a poker raise. It is a common knowledge that one should make a poker raise when one has a very strong hand and one wants to make a lot of money. This is certainly true but there are many other reasons to raise a poker. It is just important to know what you are aiming for when you are going for a poker raise.
A good and expert poker player would agree that there are five reasons to go for a raise in a game of poker. The reasons are:
a) To win a handsome amount of money from your hand.
The most basic and simplest rationale to make a poker raise is to earn more money. And a player can go for it when he knows that he has got the best hand in the game and try to get more money into the pot.
b) To eliminate other players, you may go for a poker raise.
Another simple concept to make a poker raise is eliminating other players. You can easily do this when you raise with AA or KK and get the other players out of the game before they can see the flop. Another move by which you can raise and eliminate other players is when you flop top pair.
c) To get a “free card” for yourself.
Well the “free card” does not actually come for free but it costs less. When you are in a later position then you can raise to get a “free card” if you go for a flop and open ended straight draw.
d) You can go for a poker raise if you want to gain information.
Gaining information by raising a poker is a complex way and this is the best option when you are making it just on the flop or before the flop. It is difficult to have an idea about the opponents’ hand before the flop and the hand can be anything but when you raise and a player re-raises at your raise then you know he has got a good hand.
e) You can poker raise to bluff or semi-bluff.
Lower limit games do not need too much of bluffing. Bluffing is an imperative strategy of games that go into higher limits or in no-limit games and tournaments. However semi-bluffing is an important strategy that one should be aware of in the game of poker. Semi-bluffing means raising a hand that is not the best one probably at the time of the bet but might improve with more cards. A player can easily win the pot then and there with a semi-bluff. So in case you are certain that all the other players will fold after you have made a poker raise and no one will check raise you then go for a semi-bluff. Always remember to semi-bluff according to the game.
Poker raise is part strategy part art and if you know it then the fortune is yours to have.
